Home energy automation

Home Assistant: home battery guide

Home Assistant brings energy data and smart-home controls together. For battery owners, it can provide visibility and the foundations for automations tailored to the household.

01

See where your electricity goes

The Energy dashboard can combine grid imports, solar production and battery flows from compatible integrations. Correct energy sensors are the starting point for understanding how much energy is stored, used and exported.

02

Monitoring and control are separate checks

An integration that shows state of charge may not expose charging controls. Before building automation, check the documented features for your inverter, including whether the integration is local or cloud-based and whether it can write the settings you need.

03

Add rules or a planning engine

Home Assistant supports user-defined automations. A planning tool such as PredBat can be added for forecast-led battery scheduling. A dashboard alone does not establish an optimal charging strategy; the rules and input data determine the behaviour.

04

A practical setup sequence

Begin by observing data and comparing it with the manufacturer app. Introduce control changes gradually, with a clear way to return to a known schedule. Document your tariff windows and reserve requirements, and check operation after updates or tariff changes.

  • Confirm reliable measurements
  • Verify supported control commands
  • Define reserve and fallback behaviour
  • Monitor the first charging cycles

COMMON QUESTIONS

Home Assistant FAQ

Is Home Assistant a managed battery service?

It is a home automation platform. You choose and maintain the integrations and automations, or arrange help from a competent specialist.

Can I use it just to monitor my battery?

Yes, where a suitable integration provides the required data. Reading energy data and authorising battery control are different capabilities.

Compare the hardware, tariff and control.

Use the compatibility checker, then confirm your exact model and any existing controller with the provider.
